Planning Your Tent Draping

Before starting your tent draping project, you must first assess your venue and tent and decide on your event theme and style.

Determine your tent's dimensions, shape, and structure. Having this information is crucial so you’ll know the amount of fabric that you need for draping. More fabric will be needed for larger tents than smaller tents, which call for exact measurements of drapes to create a cohesive, less cluttered look.

You should also take into account your guest count to achieve an effective tent draping. A large number of guests would need extensive and dramatic draping for great visual impact.  The kind, color, and material of your drapes should also fit your wedding's theme.

You can use a variety of fabrics that work well with tent draping.

A favorite for creating a soft and romantic mood is chiffon, a lightweight and sheer fabric. Voile also offers a soft, airy look similar to chiffon but is slightly crispier. It works wonderfully to make billowy drapes.

Satins is known for its smooth and shiny surface, giving a luxurious feel to formal and traditional weddings. Tulle, on the other hand, features a very fine, light netting that is perfect for creating a whimsical setting.

Select drape colors that complement your overall wedding color scheme. You can also choose hues based on the mood and vibe you want to create. For example, colors like red, orange, and yellow create a cozy and warm ambiance, while cool shades like blues and greens can have a calming effect.

Draping Techniques

Transform a plain tent into an exquisite space that will take your wedding ceremony to the next level. Use any of the following methods for draping:

First, gather all necessary supplies such as the fabric, hooks or poles, and decor accents. You may need to measure the height and width of the tent to know the amount of fabric you need for draping.

Establish an anchor point using a hook, ceiling, or a pole in the middle of the tent ceiling. This acts as the focal point and keeps the fabric in place. Attach the fabric to the anchor then extend it to the edges of the tent. Allow the fabric to hang loosely in curves to create swags. You can also make pleats and folds for a more structured look.

Wall Draping

Make sure you have enough fabric to completely cover the walls of your tent. Secure the fabric to the frame starting at the top of the tent wall using clips, hooks, or Velcro.

Use several wall-draping styles according to your taste. Go for a gathered look by bunching the fabric at regular intervals, creating gentle, cascading folds.

Fold the fabric at regular intervals and fasten each fold to the frame to produce a pleated drape. For a sleek and modern-looking straight drape, hang the fabric from the top of the tent straight down, then secure it at the bottom.

Entry Draping

Use heavy or layered fabrics to drape the entrance frame, letting it pool to the ground and create a dramatic entrance. Secure the fabric at the top and sides of the frame. Utilize ties, clips, or ribbons to hold the fabric in place. You can also add decor such as flower arrangements, lighting, and signage.
