What is Chiffon Fabric?

Chiffon is a delicate, lightweight fabric with a semi-transparent appearance that has a slight sheen. It is loosely woven from fine fabric giving it a soft and flowing drape. It is often used as party linens like drapes, tablecloths, runners, and chair covers. Moreover, it is used as fabric for garments like wedding dresses and evening wear.

This material was originally made out of silk fibers, making what is known as silk chiffon. Today, chiffon fabric is usually made out of synthetic fibers creating nylon or polyester chiffon.

Can Chiffon be Ironed?

The simple answer is yes, chiffon can be ironed. However, because of its delicate composition, you need to follow the guidelines on how to iron your chiffon material correctly. Careful handling will help you prevent damaging your fabric.

Tips for Ironing Chiffon Fabric

Here are some basic rules and tips to iron your fabric without damaging it. Get wrinkles out of your chiffon without the heat damage and scorching with this quick guide.

1. Use a Low-Heat Setting

Make sure to use a low heat setting on your flat iron. If it has a setting for “silk,” make sure to use that one as well. You can start with the lowest heat setting and work your way up to get the best temperature without causing heat damage. Too much heat may cause your fabric to melt or burn up.

2. Use a Pressing Cloth

When ironing chiffon material, especially when ironing silk chiffon, use a press cloth over it to add a layer of protection. A press cloth is a light or thin fabric, preferably made out of cotton or muslin, that you can place above your material. This way you can protect it from direct heat while still getting rid of wrinkles.

3. Gentle Pressure

Use gentle, smooth, and gliding motions when ironing chiffon. Don’t press down too hard to avoid distorting or stretching your fabric. This will also prevent you from adding wrinkles to the fabric. Move from side to side or up and down to avoid damaging the fibers.

4. Iron on the Backside

Preserve the sheen of the outer portion of your chiffon by ironing on the backside. This also helps you avoid damage to visible areas of your fabric on the off chance of heat damage or scorching.
